How do I prepare for an Intravitreal Injection?

There is minimal preparation needed for an intravitreal injection at our facility, if you are having the procedure carried out without any intravenous sedation. You do not need to fast, and you do not need to wear any specific clothing other than something you feel comfortable wearing to our facility.

If you are having an intravenous sedation, you will need to be fasted for 6 hour prior to your procedure time. You can drink clear fluids (black tea, black coffee, clear apple juice or water) up until two hour prior to your procedure. Nothing is to pass your lips for 2 hours prior to your sedation - this includes lozenges, chewing gum, and all food/fluids.

Our clinical staff will confirm your identity, check your medical condition against our notes, then administer numbing drops to your eye over the course of a couple of minutes. You may be asked to take medications to lower your eye pressure if the surgeon recommends it.

Your ophthalmologist will prepare your eye for the injection, then they may administer another local anaesthetic injection into the eye. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the preparation, the will administer the injection to the vitreous humour at the back of the eye.
